Zurich closes recycling loop with Scania biogas truck

24 FEBRUARY 2021

Zurich is a green city and its Office of Parks and Open Spaces, Grün Stadt Zürich, manages 40 percent of the entire city area. The department, which employs  550 people including apprentices, maintains all public green spaces in the city: street and park trees, urban woodlands, parks, sports -and playgrounds, and cemeteries.

These daily activities generate huge amounts of organic waste and Grün Stadt Zürich has therefore invested in a Scania G 410 gas truck fuelled with locally-produced biogas.

“We can run on 100 percent biogas”

“Scania offers us the opportunity to use a gas engine, that we can run on 100 percent biogas,” says Beat Schraner, Fleet Manager at Grün Stadt Zürich. “We have large amounts of green waste that we can refuel from, thereby reaching a closed recycling loop.”

The City of Zürich attaches particular importance to the environment and its departments are expected to act as role models, according to Schraner. “With this truck we can do that and that’s why this is the ideal vehicle for us in carrying out daily work.”
